A recent analysis by climatecentral.org measures the environmental impact of electric versus hybrid cars in all states. States that rely heavily on fossil fuels like coal and natural gas conventional are better off with hybrids. Only 11 states have enough clean electricity to benefit from EVs at this time.
“Conventional gas-powered hybrid vehicles are still better for the climate than all-electric cars in most U.S. states … high-efficiency hybrids, such as the Toyota Prius, produce fewer carbon emissions during their lifecycle than the least-polluting electric cars … analysts … considered the high emissions associated with building the batteries and other components for the EVs.
