We envision Memphis as the healthiest, greenest city in the United States. Our City is populated by residents who understand the complexities of our food system and use that knowledge to grow or raise their own food and to support other sustainable growers. Community gardens abound, which reduces blight, rekindles community relationships, and provides healthy food.
>Sustainable Shelby (County), TN
In 2008, the region’s first agenda for sustainability was completed with the Sustainable Shelby Implementation Plan. This plan established a strategic framework for action with regard to “green” initiatives in Memphis and Shelby County.
>Project Green Fork
The average restaurant produces 50,000 pounds of garbage per year and, typically, close to 95% of this waste could be recycled or composted. Project Green Fork was founded in 2008 specifically because of those statistics. Project Green Fork contributes to a sustainable Mid-South by helping reduce environmental impacts, with a focus on strengthening homegrown restaurants.
>Memphis Farmers Market (downtown)
The Memphis Farmers Market is a weekly non-profit outdoor market featuring local farmers and artisans. The market showcases locally sourced produce and food items and locally produced arts and crafts from the Mid-South region and also serves to educate the community about eating local, nutrition and food choices. Enjoy live music and weekly themed events and programs.
>The Ag Center Farmers Market
The farmers market is a part of the Agricenter International, a self-sustaining, not-for-profit organization providing economic development and improved quality of life by facilitating agricultural research, educational programs, environmental conservation, natural area preservation and recreational opportunities.
>Citizens to protect Overton Park
Vision: To preserve and defend the Old Forest and open spaces of Overton Park for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations.
>Clean Memphis
Clean Memphis is a 501(c)(3) grassroots organization founded in 2008 by a group of concerned citizens who believe that a cleaner city will help to reduce crime, promote a sense of pride in out community and cultivate economic prosperity. Our goal is to engage every Memphian in getting and keeping Memphis clean.

Livable Memphis represents a diverse group of local stakeholders and supports the development and redevelopment of healthy, vibrant, and economically sustainable communities in Shelby County. They strive to educate residents and build consensus on a shared vision of livable communities, and promoting public policies that further that vision.

The Mission of Greater Memphis Greenline, Inc. is to create a multi-use trail network to enhance the quality of life for all.

A part of the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, this not-for-profit service is dedicated to connecting people everywhere to Tennessee farms, farmers, farmers markets and all the great things that come from Tennessee farms and food businesses. Pick Tennessee can help you find about 2,000 individual Tennessee farmers and farm-direct businesses who list almost 10,000 farm products.
