When Johnny Tarsikes hired me as a part-time lab tech and part-time photographer at The San Antonio Express-News he told me I took some good pictures but I needed to learn how to see. On slow days in the lab he encouraged me to walk around look for interesting feature pictures for the local news section.
It was about a two-mile walk down Houston Street from the newspaper office to the farmer’s market and back. I made that walk every chance I had. Houston Street was a multi-cultural mixing place where you could find the finest theater in town next to a locally owned Tacqueria.
One day I saw some fashion merchandisers building a new window display in a high end department store right across the street from the Majestic Theater. When they saw me taking a picture they hurriedly tried to close the blinds and they almost made it.
